Acetyl Hexapeptide-8
Also known as: Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Argireline, Acetyl Hexapeptide-3
What It Is
A 6-amino-acid peptide acetylated at the N-terminus. Commonly known as Argireline® (branded name by Lipotec). One of the most studied and widely recognized anti-wrinkle peptides in cosmetics.
What It Does
Inhibits the SNARE protein complex that triggers muscle contractions involved in repetitive facial expressions. This mechanism theoretically reduces the formation of expression lines (forehead lines, crow's feet) with consistent use.
Best For
Benefits
- One of the most research-backed cosmetic peptides for expression line reduction
- Non-invasive alternative for people curious about Botox-like effects
- Works in water-based formulas — easy to layer in a routine
- Accumulative results with consistent use
When to Be Careful
- Not as potent or predictable as neurotoxin injections (Botox/Dysport)
- Requires consistent use over weeks to months to see results
- Effect is modest compared to injectable alternatives
The "Botox in a bottle" association drives enormous consumer interest. While the topical effect is far more modest than injections, the mechanism is genuinely relevant and the ingredient is well-studied.
Acetyl hexapeptide-8 will not replicate Botox results. The concentration and delivery limitations of topical application mean results are real but subtle. Think of it as softening, not freezing.
Morning or evening — as part of a peptide serum before moisturizer. Works with consistent daily use rather than occasional application.
Pentapeptide-18 (complementary expression-reducing peptide), Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 (collagen support), Hyaluronic Acid
Generally very well tolerated — one of the gentlest anti-aging actives.
Peptides do not cause typical overuse reactions like acids or retinoids.
