Glycolic Acid

What It Is
The smallest alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), derived from sugar cane. Widely used in chemical exfoliation for its ability to break down the bonds between dead skin cells.

When to Be Careful

Glycolic acid is the OG exfoliating acid. Decades of clinical research and an accessible price point (especially through The Ordinary) made it the go-to for anyone wanting a glow-promoting exfoliant.
More frequent use does not equal faster results. Glycolic acid increases skin sensitivity over time when overused. 2–3x per week is often more effective and less damaging than daily use.
Evening only, after cleansing on dry skin, before moisturizer. Do not layer directly with other exfoliating actives.
Normal to combination skin types, people with dull skin, uneven texture, or surface hyperpigmentation who are comfortable with chemical exfoliants.
