Ceramides
Also known as: Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Ceramide NS, Ceramide Complex, Phyto-ceramides
What It Is
Lipid molecules that make up approximately 50% of the skin's natural barrier (stratum corneum lipid matrix). Ceramides hold skin cells together and prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
What It Does
Ceramides fill gaps in the skin's lipid barrier — reducing water loss, improving barrier integrity, and creating the seal that keeps irritants and pathogens out. Topical ceramides replenish levels depleted by age, over-cleansing, harsh actives, and environmental stressors.
Best For
Benefits
- Barrier lipid replenishment — fills gaps in the lipid matrix to restore the skin's natural seal
- Reduces TEWL (transepidermal water loss) significantly
- Non-irritating: one of the most tolerated barrier actives
- Works synergistically with cholesterol and fatty acids for complete barrier repair
When to Be Careful
- Concentration-dependent — trace amounts provide minimal barrier support
- Best in a complete barrier lipid formula (ceramide + cholesterol + fatty acids)
Final step in the serum/moisturizer layer — morning and/or evening.
Dry, sensitive, barrier-stressed, or post-active skin. Essential in a routine with retinol, acids, or any stripping actives.
No known concerns.
No signs of overuse — ceramides are always beneficial for the barrier.
